The event, Territorial Foresight for Intergenerational Justice: Tools and Practices for Sustainable Regional Policy and Planning, forms part of the Big Question Week “What if spatial planning took intergenerational justice seriously?”. It will take place on 10 December 2025, from 09.00-12.30 CET.
This session will explore how regional policies and spatial plans can use territorial foresight to address the long-term territorial impacts of climate change, demographic shifts, digitalisation, and sustainable growth. Practical tools are required to help develop forward-looking visions that address these impacts, translate visions into concrete actions for policy and planning, and foster collective participation in territories and communities.
The session will begin with presentations and discussion from academic and practitioner perspectives on the current application of territorial foresight methods and techniques to articulate visions of future development in territories and how these are integrated into policies and plans.
Participants will then form small groups for a workshop activity to deliberate key questions: How can regional policies and spatial plans balance trade-offs between immediate and long term economic, environmental and social pressures? What type of objectives should be prioritised and what does this mean for associated indicators, targets and timescales? Who should be involved in setting these, and how?
The first part of the session will be in hybrid form, while the second part will be in-person, followed by lunch. The session is in The Hague (TU Delft, The Hague Campus, Bezuidenhoutseweg 63, Den Haag) and can also be attended digitally.
