LDnet is cooperating with AEIDL supporting a joint internernship in Brussels. Noémie Bessette, student of Sciences-Po Rennes (France) started her four-month internship working on a number of tasks. A key topic of her internship concerns Community Led Climate Action (CLCA) in the EU, as outlined below.
Since its establishment in 1988, AEIDL has focused its attention mainly on supporting EU networking and communications activities linked to sustainable local development in Europe. These activities have spanned different geographical contexts (rural, urban, fisheries areas) and also different thematic areas (rural, urban and fisheries area development, employment, social innovation, the environment).
AEIDL’s involvement in ECOLISE, which also subsequently led to its participation in the SIRCLe project, focusing on supporting social and ecological entrepreneurship, has opened up a potential new field of activity in the area of community-led climate action (CLCA). CLCA specifically pertains to the field of climate change, and the actions are twofold: mitigation or adaptation.
Even though climate change has no boundaries, local actions can become efficient and smart solutions (as the saying goes “think globally act locally”). Community-led thus implies a bottom-up approach to the local/global challenges. As with CLLD, CLCA is based on the community assets and strengths arising through the synergy of multiple actors with their own interests coming together with the same ambition.
My part time internship at AEIDL is dedicated to CLCA, identifying and collecting evidence on community-led climate actions throughout the European union, enlightening the variety of actions being led and their variety of shapes, with the aim to set up a body of knowledge in the field. It is a rather complex matter, due to the wide range of actions (renewable energies, green farming, circular economy, etc.) combined with the variety of legal provisions in every country and region. In the early stages on my current work, the question remains open on which criteria to use for selecting and defining the actions in all their shapes and colours.
