FARNET: the European Fisheries Areas Network
FARNET is the community of people and organisations implementing Community-Led Local Development (CLLD) under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF). This network brings together Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs), managing authorities, local actors, citizens and experts from across the EU to work on the sustainable development of fisheries and coastal areas. In the period 2014-2020, CLLD approach will be implemented in over 320 fisheries areas in 20 Member States. In each of these areas, local partnerships will develop their strategies, animate the community and select projects which contribute to strategic objectives, such as creating jobs and businesses within and outside the fisheries sector, enhancing and capitalising on environmental assets, promoting social well-being and cultural heritage, involving communities in fisheries and maritime governance…
In 2016, capacity building and exchange of experience between FARNET stakeholders focused mainly on ways to achieve and demonstrate results and on supporting business development along the fisheries supply chain. Potential themes for 2017 include such topics as promoting social inclusion in fisheries areas, developing sustainable aquaculture and strengthening the role of small-scale fisheries in local governance. FARNET will also continue its work on improving CLLD implementation through peer learning and exchange of practice between all actors of the delivery chain.
